Josh Magennis scores 100th career goal | NIPW

Northern Ireland striker Josh Magennis reached yet another personal milestone at the weekend when he scored his 100th career goal as Wigan Athletic ended their League One season on a high with a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers.

The 33-year-old, who last week played his 500th club game, received a standing ovation from the Wigan fans when he was substituted, a reception that Latics boss Shaun Maloney felt was totally deserved.

“I loved that,” Maloney told the club website.

“I thought Josh was brilliant, really good today,” added Maloney. “He showed speed and power in a wide area, and he took the first goal very well.

“He dominated the defence... his performance was... very, very good.”

Also in League One, Paddy Lane took his tally of goals for the season to 12 as he scored in the champions Portsmouth’s 2-0 away success at Lincoln City, while Dion Charles scored from the penalty spot to claim his 18th of the season as Bolton Wanderers drew 3-3 at Peterborough United. Both teams are now in the League One play-offs for a place in the Championship after Derby County secured the second automatic promotion slot.

Defender Carl Johnston scored his first of the campaign as relegated Fleetwood Town said goodbye to League One with a 3-0 home victory over Burton Albion.

“I was glad to get on the scoresheet,” said the Northern Ireland Under-21s captain. “It was a great ball from Ryan (Graydon) right into my path, one touch and finish.

“I’ve probably missed a few chances over the past couple of weeks where I should have been on the scoresheet so I’m just glad to end the season on a high.”

Ethan Galbraith capped a fine season with Leyton Orient off with a sublime finish, and an assist, in his side’s 3-1 victory at Shrewsbury Town.

After the game the 22-year-old said: “The last couple of games we haven’t been at it so to finish the season with a win is great.

“I probably should have had two goals but maybe I was a bit over confident and got stuck in two minds, but yeah it is always nice to help the team.”

Elsewhere midfielder Charlie McCann scored the only goal of the game as Forest Green Rovers, who were already relegated, ended their season with a win over Notts County.

In the Championship, Brodie Spencer was in the Huddersfield Town side who could only draw at home to Birmingham City to make relegation to League One virtually guaranteed, while Jordan Thompson helped Stoke City to a 1-0 win at Southampton to ensure their place in the Championship next term.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, Ross McCausland, who was used as a substitute in Rangers’ 2-1 victory at St Mirren, who had both Caolan Boyd-Munce and Conor McMenamin in their starting line-up, was named as the club’s Young Player of the Year.

Under-21 international goalkeeper Josh Clarke, who is on loan at Ayr United from Celtic, kept his third clean sheet of the season in the scoreless draw with Partick Thistle, and former Chelsea defender Sam McClelland was part of the Dundee United team who clinched promotion back to the Premiership following a 0-0 draw at Airdrieonians.

Finally, up and coming midfielder Justin Devenny scored a stunning free-kick in Crystal Palace’s 3-2 U21 Premier League victory over Middlesbrough, a result which sees them qualify for the play-off phase of the competition.
